Congress passed a law restricting freedom of speech for clergy, specifically by denying them the ability to:
participate in, or intervene in any political campaign on behalf of, or in opposition to, any candidate for public office
This law is a requirement for any church which wants to retain its tax exempt status, which previously had been given without any such restrictions.
Now a (small but growing) group of pastors is challenging this law directly by practice by planning to endorse specific candidates.
All of which is to say that I was pretty much obligated to respond to this, which I did over at Restless Christian (my Tumblr for religious stuff).
