We saw an awesome Harry Potter exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago on Sunday.
This is the only picture that I have because they don’t allow photography inside.
What is inside?
Props from the various Harry Potter movies.
Let that sink in for a moment.
You go to an exhibit of actual props from the Harry Potter movies.
And they don’t want you taking pictures…
Of the same things that you can see in the movies.
Because apparently if you can see (2D) pictures of stuff in the movies, you’ll have less interest in seeing the (3D) display at the museum.
By this same logic, no one who has already seen the movies would be interested in seeing the exhibit.
Of course there were a ton of people taking pictures. Everything from people with fancy-schmancy DSLRs who had their cameras on straps around their necks and simply held down the shutter button, taking multiple pictures of everything they were interested in seeing; to teenage girls with cell phone cameras giggling at Harry Potter’s bed, and so forth.
Then again, remember that J.K Rowling is such a luddite that she won’t allow ebooks of the Harry Potter books to prevent piracy (do a couple Google searches to see how well that’s turning out), and I assume that is the same reason that her books are available on CD but not available from Audible.com. Because, as we all know, it is utterly impossible for material on CDs to be distributed on the Internet.
I think this may actually be stupider than the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which has “No Photography” signs everywhere and docents who are well versed in sounding very official using words like “Intellectual Property. One of them said that they have many pieces which were loaned to them under the strict guidelines banning photography.
Because if there’s anything that Rock & Roll has always been about, it’s very strict adherence to any and all laws concerning behavior.
