I’m always amazed when I see people using the Dock on the bottom of their screen. With all the current Macs having wide screens, there’s more space left-to-right than top-to-bottom.
…[snip]…
This is a good tip, and anyone who is interested in having their dock on the left should visit the original post for the Terminal commands.
With that said, there are a few things I’ve never been able to figure out:
- Why would anyone not use the auto-hide function for the dock?
- Why would anyone who does use the auto-hide function want their dock on the left or right?
1. By leaving your dock always showing, you’re constantly wasting valuable screen
I don’t use the auto-hide for two reasons:
I use Dock icon “badges” to give me information about unread emails, unread Twitter posts, CPU usage, etc. In fact, if I could find an app like the old NeXTSTEP Preferences app which showed the Date and Time in the dock, I’d remove it from my menu bar.
I usually am using two monitors, so I put it off to the side on the 2nd monitor so I can glance at it when I want to without having to touch the mouse (which I also hate).
I also find auto-hide annoying because when I use it, it tends to think I’m done using the Dock before I am.
Auto-hide is a feature I keep thinking that I should like but, in practice, I don’t.
