Bill Withers: “Ain’t No Sunshine” (Live)

Which you probably won’t watch, because it’s all of like 2 minutes long.

I love this song. Maybe you don’t. That’s ok. I mean, it probably indicates there’s something wrong with you, but that’s OK. Nobody’s perfect.

It’s a haunting tune with great lyrics: “Ain’t no sunshine when she’s gone… it’s not warm when she’s away… this house just ain’t no home, anytime she goes away…”

Simple, plain, honest, painful emotion.

His woman is gone, and he feels incomplete without her.

I happened to be at the Last.fm page for this song and read this quote from Bill Withers about the inspiration of this song:

I was watching a movie called Days of Wine and Roses with Lee Remick and Jack Lemmon.

They were both alcoholics who were alternately weak and strong.

It’s like going back for seconds on rat poison.

Sometimes you miss things that weren’t particularly good for you.

So does that mean that the song is about him missing a woman who wasn’t good for him? Well, ain’t that a kick in the head.

Either way, I bet that last line sticks with you:

Sometimes you miss things that weren’t particularly good for you.
