President Obama is working systematically to marginalize the most powerful forces behind the Republican Party, setting loose top White House officials to undermine conservatives in the media, business and lobbying worlds.

With a series of private meetings and public taunts, the White House has targeted the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the biggest-spending pro-business lobbying group in the country; Rush Limbaugh, the country’s most-listened-to conservative commentator; and now, with a new volley of combative rhetoric in recent days, the insurance industry, Wall Street executives and Fox News. …

Privately, officials have talked with relish for months of the potential to isolate the GOP as a narrow party of white, Southern conservatives with little appeal to independent-minded voters.

Democrats fighting back? This I’ve got to see.

Me too…

It is interesting that the most influential forces behind the Republican party are Fox News (etc) and Rush Limbaugh… unlike, say, anyone elected to an actual position.

My hope for the outcome? That the current fake structure of hatred and ignorance which has choked off the Republican party since (at least) Reagan will be reborn into something better.

We need two parties (at least) which are functional and healthy.

I don’t think we have one at the moment.

The Republicans are well organized and speak with what seems to be a unified front. They can get stuff done. The Dems seem to spend all of their time planning to do something, wanting to do something, but never actually doing it.

They remind me of the “People’s Front of Judea” from Life of Brian.

The Republicans are the Romans: efficient and well organized, but ruthless, brutal, and heartless.

ps - when I say “Republicans” or “Democrats” I mean the political leadership as a whole. I am aware that individuals who consider themselves members of each party might not fit the broad strokes with which I am painting.
