opening line of The Children of Men which is one of my favorite books.
My college advisor gave me a copy of the book in 1993 as a thank-you for helping him with a book project. I had worked as his research assistant that summer, and “girlfriend-of-TJ” (at the time) had worked for he and his wife as their nanny. I remember starting to read the book in the Pittsburgh airport and being completely enthralled.
Years later they made it into a movie which had almost nothing at all to do with the story I so loved.
