By the way, the subject of that paper was completely inspired by Tumblr…
… specifically the Pray for Obama thing from last week. If there’s interest, I can post a summary, but here’s a couple of salient points:
May his days be few; may another seize his position.
That was the verse in question. Now either it was plucked out of thin air and people had no idea what it was about, which makes them pretty shitty Christians who can’t even read the Bible… or they did read the following verses which talk about his children being orphans and his wife widow, which makes them pretty shitty Christians for praying that.
So your choices are: malicious or stupid. Frankly, both are possible. With most people, they just looked up that one verse (or it was written in the email they received) and if they don’t like Obama, they thought it was funny.
But someone started this.
And that person? I bet you that person knew exactly what the rest of the passage said.
Anyway, the bulk of Psalm 109 is a list of evil wishes that these “others” wish on an innocent man who has done nothing wrong. They repay good with evil.
They are referred to as “accusers”.
Oh, except in Hebrew, it sounds a little better, because the Hebrew word for “accuser” is (and I am not making this up):
satan
Now this is not “Satan” used as a proper name these are just people who do evil things in Satan’s name. Satan’s minions.
So, for those who haven’t been following along:
A bunch of extremist, right wing nut-jobs who call themselves “Christians” plucked a single verse out of the Bible which at worst says that they want God to kill the president, and at best says “Hey, we’re going to side with these LITERALLY SATANIC assholes who accused someone who has done nothing to deserve it.
Jesus said “pray for your enemies”.
These guys want to pray that their enemy is killed by God.
That is the very literal definition of anti- (as in “against” or “opposite of”) Jesus, or “Anti-Christ.”
They are about as Christian as I am a supermodel, and these fucking assholes are so stupid they picked sides with the devil while trying to seem clever and religious. (Which, by the way, is exactly how the devil usually works.)
Once again the “Religious Right” is neither.
In case you were wondering…
