Why does instapaper cost so much to keep running? Any chance that was an exaggeration?
Well, first Marco pays himself $9,950/month in salary…
(I’m kidding.)
(OTOH, he lives in Brooklyn, so I assume his rent is about $9,000/month. :-)
Honestly, I have no idea, and that’s an interesting question, however, I don’t think it was an exaggeration. I suspect that the costs are for database servers (and “backup” servers in case of increased need), storage, backups, and bandwidth.
I’m going to ask him, and maybe he’ll talk about the answer on Build & Analyze.

Interesting. How does Instapaper differ from Read It Later, other than the latter being free?
Honestly, I’ve used Instapaper since forever, so I haven’t checked out Read It Later. I can tell you that I find Instapaper “integrated” into more iOS apps. There’s also an API that you can use to add your own articles, and you can even send URLs via email (or even just long emails). You may be able to do those things in RIL, I’m not sure.
Anyway, I’ve only given away 8 of the 10 copies I offered, so there are still 2 left if anyone is interested! See http://funsizebytes.com/post/29415698386/the-way-that-you-can-tell-that-marco-is-a-nice-guy for details.
