I’m not sure exactly what it was that made me want to change my Tumblr name, but mostly it had to do with me sometimes getting fixated on something and then needing to do something about it.
If I was looking for a less-insane sounding answer, it would be one part from Theresa whose Tumblr “tagline” says:
Theresa is a person. This is a blog.
“FunSizeBytes” is the website. “TJ” is my name.
I also noticed that Merlin shows up as “Merlin” even though his Tumblr is http://www.kungfugrippe.com. But then I realized that you can also get there via http://merlin.tumblr.com.
So I went in search for an answer, which involved some of my own work and some help by Marc @ Tumblr Support.
The short answer is pretty simple: goto http://tumblr.com/customize and change the URL. For example, in the picture above, where you see that it says http:// tj.tumblr.com used to say “funsizebytes.tumblr.com”
Of course, no one has ever used funsizebytes.tumblr.com because I’ve had a custom domain name funsizebytes.com but if you wanted to you could have. Any funsizebytes.com URL could also be used as funsizebytes.tumblr.com.
funsizebytes.tumblr.com used to point to funsizebytes.com
tj.tumblr.com used to point to talesofbeingtj.com
talesofbeingtj.tumblr.com just had one post, a link to talesofbeingtj.com.
http://funsizebytes.tumblr.com has one post, a link to http://funsizebytes.com
http://tj.tumblr.com now points to http://funsizebytes.com
http://talesofbeingtj.tumblr.com now points to http://talesofbeingtj.com
If you use YourName.Tumblr.com as your Tumblr name, changing the name is (I’m guessing) going to lead to a lot of broken links. However, I was fortunate in that I had a “real” domain as my Tumblr.
No incoming or outgoing links have broken, but now you will see “TJ liked this” instead of “Funsizebytes liked this” or “TJ reblogged this” rather than “Funsizebytes reblogged this”. And that makes me just a little happier.
