I’ve had this “song” stuck in my head all day for no reason.
There’s probably no real chance that I was ever going to become a monk, but after seeing this scene whatever chance there had been was completely gone.
Thing I Already Knew: “Pie Iesu domine, dona eis requiem”. The translation of this is: “Merciful Lord Jesus, grant them rest.” It’s part of the standard Latin funeral rite.
Thing I Learned: This scene was a specific reference to the Flagellants:
Flagellantism was a 13th and 14th centuries movement, consisting of radicals in the Catholic Church. It began as a militant pilgrimage and was later condemned by the Catholic Church as heretical. The followers were noted for including public flagellation in their rituals.
So… huh. Who knew Youtube comments could teach you anything except a general disdain for humanity?
