“What are Tumblr Pages and why would I want one”?

Tumblr announced Pages today, which is one of the few features that I’ve thought it was really “missing” compared with other blogging platforms.

Why would you want “Pages”? The first example is shown right on the announcement page, an “About” page which gives some introductory information about you.

But it’s also an easy way to link to other services. For example, you could make a “/flickr” page which automatically redirects to your Flickr page, like this:

so now when someone goes to http://funsizebytes.com/flickr it will automatically take them to http://www.flickr.com/photos/tjluoma/.

(Dear Web nerds: these are 301 redirects. Dear Normals: OOH! Kitties!!)

You could do the same for other services: Twitter, Facebook, etc.

It also lets you create your own “short URLs”. For example:

And so on.

This is fairly significant. Combined with the backup app, I’m now considering whether or not I want to move my main site to Tumblr.

I can’t think of any significant feature that Tumblr is lacking for what I want/need.
