Archie Bell & The Drells - Tighten Up (Live!)

I think we could all use a little pick-me-up today.

    Now make it mellow!

(*thud* … A backup dancer kicks the mic stand on his first fancy spin. So great!)

    It’s always the right time.

(But I have to say: these guys are terrible at The Fishstick.)

  • TED Talks

The other day on Twitter I asked people to recommend TED talks (now that there is a TED iPad app).

I received several, so I compiled them all here (If you would like to add one, please use the answerbox below)

Here’s a list of the suggestions I received (note that I haven’t watched any of these yet, so I can’t vouch for them). Also, there’s no search feature in the iPad app (oops!) so you’ll have to look through the themes/tags to find them. (Or, if you don’t want to use the iPad app, I’ve linked to them here or there’s an iTunes podcast feed.)

(please note these are in pretty much random order)

@enantiomorph recommended Bonnie Bassler on how bacteria “talk” and Theo Jansen creates new creatures.

@thomaspaine recommended Pranav Mistry: The thrilling potential of SixthSense technology.

@timrosenberg recommended How to cheat at Scrabble {which isn’t a TED talk but still looked interesting}, Benjamin Zander on music and passion, John Hodgman: Aliens, love — where are they?, and James Randi’s fiery takedown of psychic fraud.

    @bsailer recommended Adam Savage’s obsessions.

@phearlez recommended Dan Meyer: Math class needs a makeover.

@CalebSexton recommended Elizabeth Gilbert on nurturing creativity and Billy Graham on technology and faith.

@angleofattack recommended Hans Rosling shows the best stats you’ve ever seen.

@redrabbit recommended David Gallo shows underwater astonishments.

@goesto_eleven recommended Johnny Lee demos Wii Remote hacks.

@DysFuncJunc recommended Joshua Klein on the intelligence of crows.

    Any others?

  • Cake or Death (1m18s) from Eddie Izzard, who may be the funniest man currently alive.

If you haven’t seen his Dress To Kill show, get/rent the DVD.

UPDATE: It’s on Netflix Streaming but skip the first 3:30 which is a “tour of San Francisco” which is dramatically unfunny, IMO.

  • The Boy asked me to record him doing this and post it on the Internet.

(It’s some sort of a super-stretchy rubber “hand” that he’s… well, you’ll see.)

  • I recognized probably 95 of these movies, and am going to work hard at suppressing my OCD need to make a list of them and then try to figure out the ones that I didn’t know.

    But in any case, enjoy!

  • Wife Force One

This was one of the first YouTube videos I really thought was creatively done.

And now it’s old enough that some of you, who were in Jr High when it came out, might enjoy it.

  • “Con te partirò (Time to Say Goodbye)” by Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman

This song gives me goose bumps, every damn time.

Stop what you’re doing, take 5 minutes, and listen to it.

If you’re tempted to say “I don’t like opera music, and I can’t even understand what they’re saying”…

I will be tempted to say, “STFU.”

Seriously. Shut up, turn off Twitter, email, the phone, and anything else that might disturb you for 5 minutes and listen to this.

I loathe opera. I hear a soprano hitting a high note and I want to fill her mouth with sand.

    Even I love this song.

If this doesn’t touch your heart, you might be dead. You’re at the very least dead inside, or close to it.

    Another Version (Studio Version Dubbing?)

There is another version which is obviously concert footage dubbed with the original recording dubbed. I like it better for listening but if you’re going to watch, this is the better one.

    Solo Version

Sarah Brightman sings with him in this version. There is also a version with him singing solo

I heard the duet version first, so it tends to be the one I prefer.

    Wikipedia and English Translation

This song has its own Wikipedia entry

I had no idea what the translation was when I first heard it and still found it amazingly powerful, it’s even better if you know what they are saying to each other one is available.

    Take a copy home

You can also buy a CD/DVD at Amazon for $19 which is what I did.

Or download just this song from

    Amazon or

iTunes Note it’s an iTunes+ song, no DRM, higher quality

    I love this song.

I want this song played at my funeral (not anytime soon, mind you).

    p.s.

Have you heard of QuieTube ?

It’s the best thing ever. Bookmarklet to show you YouTube videos without all the crap around it. I’ve used it for all the links on this page. Genius.

  • Eddie Izzard on the Protestant Church.

The whole bit is hilarious, of course, but about 3:40 into the clip he starts talking up about singing in (many? most?) Protestant churches.

I couldn’t sing “Oh God Our Help in Ages Past” for about 2 years after I heard this, and I still smirk every time it comes up.
